Taunton and Wellington’s Liberal Democrat MP, Gideon Amos, has pledged his support to British farmers on the National Farmers' Union’s Back British Farmers Day (today, Wednesday).

At the General Election, the Liberal Democrats set out their plan to back British farmers including:

  • Accelerating the rollout of the new Environmental Land Management schemes, properly funding it with an extra £1bn a year to support British farmers.

  • Renegotiating the “botched” Australian and New Zealand trade deals and ensuring the high animal welfare and environmental standards of British farmers’ standards are not undercut.

  • Negotiating comprehensive veterinary and plant health agreements with the EU, to allow British farmers to trade with our European neighbours with minimal need for checks.

Mr Amos has pledged to be a voice for farmers and rural communities across Taunton and Wellington, fighting for a fair deal for them.

He said: “Farmers in Taunton and Wellington were bitterly disappointed about being so badly taken for granted and let down by the last Conservative Government.

“Many of them supported me in the General Election and now, as their Liberal Democrat MP, I will be championing the need to back British farming with the £1-billion fund we proposed in our manifesto.

“The Labour government have to ensure they value and support our farmers and the large number of Lib Dem MPs for rural communities are backing the call.
